How to choose an electrician in Spokane
Most people hire an electrician a handful of times in their life, so it is normal not to know what to ask. This checklist works for any electrician in the Spokane area, including us.
Verify the license
Washington requires electrical contractors to be licensed with the Department of Labor & Industries. Ask for the electrical contractor license number and check the relevant record through L&I. Confirm the insurance coverage needed for your job directly with the contractor. This takes minutes and filters out the worst options immediately.
Get the scope in writing
A good quote says what will be done, what is excluded, who buys the permit and how changes are priced. Be cautious of a price given only verbally, or one that assumes nothing unexpected will be found in the walls.
Ask who handles the permit
For permit work, the contractor should buy the permit and schedule the inspection. If someone suggests skipping the permit to save money, that saving becomes your problem at sale time, at insurance claim time, or worse.
Compare more than the number
- Is each quote for the same scope?
- Does it include permit and inspection fees?
- Who supplies fixtures and parts?
- What is the timeline, and how is cleanup handled?
- How are surprises priced?
Red flags
- No license number, or one that does not check out
- Cash-only with no paperwork
- Pressure to decide immediately
- Suggesting work without a permit where one is required
- No written scope
